Hertfordshire

Peace and Pace

It's one small step to leave behind the rush hour for
tranquil woods and tucked-away villages. Simply
jump on the train and in no time you'll be
freewheeling country lanes on your bike, or cruising
the Grand Union Canal on a narrow boat.

Take a short break to enjoy magnificent stately
homes, beautiful gardens, and the richly historic
St. Albans - with its majestic cathedral containing
the shrine of St. Alban, the first Christian martyr.

Refresh yourself in the open air at Knebworth
House
(nr. Stevenage), a Gothic fantasy set in
250 glorious acres - where you can lose yourself
in the maze, and take the kids on the 'Wilderness
Dinosaur Trail'. Meet and feed real animals at
Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne.

Spend time at Hatfield House, a Jacobean mansion
stuffed full of treasures set in a fabulous garden, or
at the fascinating home of sculptor Henry Moore
(Perry Green, nr. Much Hadham). Linger in the fine
old county town of Hertford to explore the shops
and castle site with its Norman motte walls, or take a wander round riverside Ware
to seek out Scott's Grotto with its thousands of shells.

Discover Space

At Lee Valley Regional Park you can sample a slice
of beautiful countryside on London's doorstep.
Award-winning sporting facilities, heritage sites, nature reserves and urban open
spaces - stretch for 26 miles along the leafy banks of the River Lee right up into
Hertfordshire and Essex. Whether you enjoy the exhilaration of ice skating, playing
golf or horseriding, the fascination of fishing and birdwatching, or the relaxation of
camping, walking and cycling - the Lee Valley Regional Park is a great day out or
weekend away for the whole family.

By far the easiest way to make the most of this 26 mile long, green oasis of open
country, is to travel by train because the 'Lee Valley Line' runs right through the
Regional Park - and you'll be reducing your carbon footprint too. Hop off at
Cheshunt station, the gateway to River Lee Country Park's wildlife and riverside
trails, or head further north to learn about the turbulent history of Rye House
Gatehouse
Wander through the tranquil meadows of Broxbourne Old Mill, or the
ancient Cornmill Meadows and Dragonfly Sanctuary. Enjoy a picnic in the historic
Waltham Abbey Gardens, or simply unwind in the gorgeous surroundings
of Myddelton House Gardens

On arriving at your destination, our '40 Routes Booklet' will show you how to
discover more of the fantastic scenery, wildlife and history of the park. On foot or by
bike, you can choose from short or longer routes that take in everything from
the wild orchids of Cheshunt, to the animals that live at Lee Valley Park Farms

Discover Space (continued)

You would have to feel really energetic to trace the
route of the River Lea from its source near Luton to
the Thames at Bow. It's a glorious 50 traffic free
miles, but there are plenty of short sections to
choose from - like the one mile hike from Cheshunt
station to Waltham Abbey, allowing you to explore
the innovative Gunpowder Park, a beacon for the
arts and the environment.

Green Escape

The River Lee Country Park, stretching along both
sides of the River Lee, is full of way-marked
walks selected to help you discover birds, flowers
and insects throughout the seasons. Try the ½ mile
‘Grasshopper Walk' (from Pindar car park) to hear the
grasshoppers and crickets on Thistly Marshes; or
set off from Hooks Marsh for the ‘Winged
Wonders'
circuit - taking in wildfowl and dragonflies.

Hop on the train to Broxbourne for the circular ‘New
River Walk'
, along a 17th C. artificial waterway. See
bats swooping over ‘Admiral's Walk Lake' - then drop
into the Fish and Eels at Dobbs Weir for
refreshments. It's 4¼ miles, but there's so much to see and do on the way you'll
hardly notice. The 'Dragonfly Discovery Trail' sets off from Cornhill Meadows in
Waltham Abbey - here the meadows are one of the best sites in Hertfordshire and
Essex to view dragonflies. In-fact over half of the species found in the UK have been
seen here - how many can you spot?

The 40 routes of varying distances for all ages and abilities commemorate the
40th anniversary of Lee Valley Regional Park. Why not work your way through them?
Clapton, Tottenham Hale, Ponders End, Enfield Lock, Turkey Street, Waltham
Cross, Cheshunt, Broxbourne
and Rye House Stations are all key entry points by
train. What's more, the sheer diversity of this amazing Regional Park is celebrated
throughout the year with a variety of events and activities.
