away in Cambridgeshire

College and Country

Waking up in the heart of Cambridge with its world
famous colleges, churches and museums, you will
be glad you left the car at home. No need to seek out
parking spaces, as you roam the historic streets
gazing up at the architecture.

Relaxing on a punt along the beautiful River Cam, or
strolling through the Botanic Garden on a warm
afternoon will give you an appetite for a delicious
meal at one of the many first-rate restaurants in the
town, perhaps followed by an evening concert or visit
to the theatre.

After a leisurely breakfast, why not jump on the train
and head up to Ely or Peterborough to see their
breathtaking cathedrals, or take a bus to the stately
homes of Anglesey Abbey (Lode, nr. Cambridge)
and Wimpole Hall (Arrington, nr. Royston). The
fantastic Imperial War Museum Duxford
(nr. Cambridge) is close at hand too. Don't miss
Peckover House at Wisbech, the museum to
Oliver Cromwell in Huntingdon or the picturesque
villages of Godmanchester and Hemingford Grey

City of Contrasts

There can be few sights more breathtaking than the West Front of Peterborough
Cathedral
As you enter the precinct, three mighty medieval arches soar up in
front of you. You are looking at one of England's finest Norman buildings.

Peterborough is one of those places where ancient and modern blend seamlessly
together, so that the historic cathedral is an oasis of calm, in a busy city rated as
one of the UK's top shopping destinations. Shopping is based on the indoor mall
with its big name stores. Around it is a network of streets with traditional and
specialist shops, farmers' and continental markets, more malls, more stores and
the full spectrum of bars, restaurants and outdoor cafes.

The kids are probably itching to see their favourite steam engine Thomas at the
Nene Valley Railway The 7.5 miles of track takes you through the 500 acre Ferry
Meadows Country Park
, which is a good reason to buy a rover ticket enabling you
to hop on and off at will for picnics and country walks.
